Paris, je t'aime
I love Paris. It is such an amazing city, it really is beautiful and inspiring. Just after new years I spent five days on the left bank in the latin quarter. It was great to see the sights but also just hanging out in cafes and exploring the shops (especially the burrow that is Shakespeare and Company book shop) Below are some photographs I took during my stay, I hope you enjoy.

Printing with John Eaves
My new short film ‘Printing with John Eaves’ is online and available to watch below! It is a short observational documentary following artist John Eaves as he works on a series of new prints.
I joined John as he worked on the series of prints at 107 Workshop (past artists include Gillian Ayres & Howard Hodgkin). For John it was an exciting and experimental process and not something he is use to.

'The Infinis Challenge' Premiers in Northampton
‘The Infinis Challenge’ is a 25 minute documentary I directed for The Infinis Energy Group (one of the U.K’s largest renewable energy producers & 3rd in The Sunday Times Best Green Companies).
It was an incredibly enjoyable project to direct, everyday we met different amazing people and shot at some fantastic locations from wind farms in Scotland to Hydro plants in Wales.
Filming lead us to each of the company’s 12 regions around the U.K over a two week intensive shoot.
The film recently had its premier to an audience of around 1,000 staff and investors over two days in Northampton as part of the company’s annual conference and went down a treat!
Thanks to everyone at Infinis!
Here are some production photographs from the shoot this summer…

I have just wrapped the main edit for my biggest film to date. It will be screening to over 500 people in three weeks time in Northampton, excited for it. Coming up, I am shooting something for Channel 4 and then working on refurbishing my dads old Rollei 35 camera (circa 1972) it is a beauty.
P.S Blaring Blink-182’s new album ‘Neighbourhoods’ - go listen to it. I want to direct the video for ‘Natives’ - boys? x

See No Evil

Bristol’s Graffiti Street is awesome. One of the most boring grey streets in the city has been transformed into Europe’s biggest street exhibition. You come around the corner and this piece welcomes you into the street. I took this photo yesterday in the city.

Currently Inspiring Me - Take 4
David Ogilvy: Essentials
I think this short from Adweek is brilliant. David Ogilvy talks of his experience in the ad business but I think his advice can be attached to filmmaking and to life in general.

Lulworth Cove
I visited the beautiful Lulworth Cove a couple of days ago. As we approached the village it seemed as though were driving straight into a cloud. It was a pretty amazing thing to see. I took some black and white photos to show the landscape, the cloud and the rock formations. In my time with John Eaves whilst filming ‘There’s No Place Like Home’ he often referred to the rocks at Lulworth as inspiration for his latest abstract pieces and presented us with pictures he had taken there back in the 50’s/60’s. I took these pictures to echo those of John’s.

There's No Place Like Home
My final university film/graduation film has just been completed. It has been months in the making but finally it’s handed in. It has been an amazing experience producing the film and a brilliant three years at Bournemouth.
Thanks to everyone that helped on the project, it relied so much on the support of the crew and it would not have been possible without these people.
There’s No Place Like Home is documentary about my home city of Bath. It follows me as I return home after three years looking to find out if there is something special about the small city of 80,000 people. I look at whether Bath, home to the likes of Ken Loach, Peter Gabriel, Nicholas Cage and Jane Austen has an unusual effect of inspiring its residents.
I joined two of the cities most prolific artists for the film, John Eaves and Pete Brown to see how the buildings, the landscape and the people have played a huge part in influencing their work.
You can see the film in full here
There’s No Place Like Home from Liam Southall on Vimeo.
Below are some behind the scenes pictures taken during our time with Pete Brown and John Eaves
We joined Pete as he worked an a small piece looking at the old post office on Sion Hill

The finished piece

Quick last touches

An amazing guy. We joined John Eaves at his house/studio overlooking the city. We had the chance to see him working on a few pieces as well as join him on a trip to a print workshop where he was working on a new series.

For the final sequence in the film we project John and Pete’s work onto the buildings around the city of Bath. We did this by running a laptop through a projector through an inverter linked to a car battery! It was great fun! Check out Christian and Elspeth at work with the projector.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the film possible. A massive thank you to Pete Brown and John Eaves for their time and amazing support to help make the film possible.
Check out Pete’s website here for news of his latest exhibitions

Swarm
I recently filmed and photographed an amazing interactive audio-visual installation work entitled ‘Swarm’ for its producer Olly Baker.
Check out Olly’s website and a full explanation of the piece right here
“Swarm, is an interactive audio-visual installation, exploring the concept of the hive mind and swarm intelligence. It is presented as a visualisation of several hundred entities, projected on a touch-sensitive projection screen, sonified with generative audio. Visitors to the installation are invited to touch the screen, which affects the behaviour of the swarm visualisation in different ways depending on where and how much of the screen is touched.”

Its been a massive shoot, with nearly 250gb of sound and visuals its going to be a epic edit over the next 10 days. Tonight’s pick up shots we will be projecting paintings by John Eaves and Pete Brown on walls around Bath and filming them for the films conclusion. Pretty excited!

Mighty Spice
I recently was the the Director of Photography and Cameraman for my friend Sam Shetabi’s graduation film and T.V pilot ‘Mighty Spice’. ‘Mighty Spice’ is presented by chef and author John Gregory-Smith, taken from his book of the same name.
The shoot was amazing, we followed John making three delicious recipes and joined him on a trip to the brilliant Borough Market.
Watch ‘Mighty Spice’ right here!

It was the biggest lighting set up I have ever done with 9 in total

Borough market really was fantastic. Amazing produce and really nice stall holders, if you haven’t been you should definitely visit!
